" Integrated Action for developed India "

To achieve the distinctive profile of India, all of us have before us the mission of transforming India into a developed nation. In order to succeed in our mission, the key five areas where India has a core competence for integrated action are: (1) Agriculture and food processing (2) Education and Healthcare (3) Infrastructure: Reliable and Quality Electric power, Surface transport and Infrastructure for all parts of the country. (4) Information and Communication Technology (5) Self reliance in critical technologies.

These five areas are closely inter-related and if progressed in a coordinated way, will lead to food, economic and national security. One of the major mission within these five areas is the development of infrastructure for bringing rural prosperity through Provision of Urban Amenities in Rural Areas (PURA) by creating three connectivities namely physical, electronic, knowledge leading to economic connectivity. The number of PURA clusters for the whole country is estimated to be 7000. Simultaneously, both from energy and environmental considerations, we should aim at achieving Energy Independence by 2030. Energy independence has got to be achieved through three different sources namely renewable energy (solar, wind and hydro power), electrical power from nuclear energy and bio-fuel for the transportation sector. Energy independence throws very important technological challenges to the country.

While we are happy that our economy is in the ascent phase and our GDP is growing at nearly 9% per annum, it is evident that economic growth is not fully reflected in the quality of life of a large number of people, particularly in rural areas and even in urban areas. Hence, we have evolved what is called a “National Prosperity Index (NPI)” which is a summation of (a) annual growth rate of GDP plus (b) improvement in quality of life of the people, particularly those living below the poverty line plus (c) the adoption of a value system derived from our civilizational heritage in every walk of life which is unique to India. That is NPI=a+b+c. Particularly, ‘b’ is a function of availability of housing, good water, nutrition, proper sanitation, quality education, quality healthcare and employment potential. ‘c’ is a function of promoting the joint family system, creation of a spirit of working together, leading a righteous way of life, removing social inequities, and above all promoting a conflict free, harmonious society. This will be indicated by peace in families and communities, reduction in corruption index, reduction in court cases, elimination of violence against children and women and communal tensions. There should be progressive reduction in the number of people living below the poverty line leading to its becoming near zero by 2020. All our efforts in improving the national economic performance should be guided by the measured National Prosperity Index of the nation at any point of time.

How shall we realize this vision? What are the immediate steps that we need to take to realize this vision?

My interaction with many of you and my understanding of the various central and state programmes, the initiatives of private and non-governmental organizations as well as the overwhelming desire of citizens to participate in the national development gives me the confidence that our society is ready to work for these missions. May I suggest that you all work together to evolve two major initiatives:
(i) To formulate an Energy Independence Bill - A three dimensional approach for energy choice towards realizing clean planet earth.

(ii) To adopt a resolution for Vision 2020: Adopt a Resolution that India will be transformed into a safe, prosperous, happy and socio-economically developed nation before the year 2020 using National Prosperity Index (NPI) as a measure.

You will agree with me the importance of making these bills a reality in a time bound manner.

"Nothing is impossible"

Human flight is nothing but creativity of human mind and it undergoes several struggles to achieve excellence. In 1895, a great well-known scientist Lord Kelvin, who was the President of Royal Society of London said, "any thing heavier than air cannot fly, and cannot be flown." Within a decade, Wright Brothers proved man could fly of course at heavy risk and cost.

On the successful completion of Moon Mission in 1969, Von Braun, a very famous rocket designer, who built Saturn-V, to launch the capsule with astronauts and made moon walk a reality, in 1975 said "If I am authorized, I will remove the word impossible".

In ancient days, Ptolemaic astronomy is a widely used system in calculating the dynamics of various stars and planets. Assumption by then was that the earth is flat. What a scientific struggle had to take place to prove that the earth is spherical in shape orbiting around the sun. The three great astronomers Copernicus, Galileo and Kepler had to give a new dimension to the world of astronomy. Today we take it for granted that earth is a globe, orbiting around the sun, and the sun orbits in the Milky Way. All the technological advancements we have today are the outcome of scientific exploration of scientists of earlier centuries. At no time, man was beaten by problems. He strives continuously to subjugate impossibility and then succeeds.

According to the laws of aerodynamics the bumble bee should never be able to fly. Because of the size, weight, and shape of its body in relationship to the total wing span, flying is scientifically impossible. The bumble bee, being ignorant of scientific theory, goes ahead and flies anyway.

"Employment and education "

Presently our university education system is contributing 3 million graduates and post graduates every year. 7 Million students after their secondary school education in 10th and 12th stop further education and seek employment every year. Thus nearly 10 million youth are injected into the society every year seeking employment.

However, there is a large gap in the availability of employable skill. For example, as per the NASSCOM and Mc. Kinsey Report 2005, it is estimated that the IT, ITES and BPO sector alone will need 9 million direct jobs and 6 million indirect jobs in construction, retail and transportation by 2010, whereas we do not have such a capacity in the country to generate this number which will be acceptable to the three sectors of economy. Similarly, in the case of nursing professional, India is in the process of improving the healthcare services which will need additional 0.5 million nurses and paramedical staff. As per the latest report, worldwide requirements for nurses are estimated to be around 1 million from now to 2012. Presently, in India about 50,000 nurses qualify every year. In the small scale sector, presently 12 million units are employing around twenty eight million people. Many of them are unregistered units. There is a need to bring all the units under the registered category so that all the people can be provided benefits accordingly. At present, the small scale industries contribute to an export of over 20 billion dollars a year, which is expected to increase to over 40 billion dollars within the next five years. This will require addition of nearly 28 million people within 5 years with variety of skills in garments, processed foods, pharmaceutical, electronics, precision engineering and cosmetic products.

How to bridge this gap between availability and requirement in the globalized economy. To bridge the gap, an interface is needed between the education system and the needs of the three sectors of the economy. At present India has five hundred and forty million youth under the age of 25 which will continuously be growing till the year 2050.

During this period, India needs large number of talented youth with higher education for the task of knowledge acquisition, knowledge imparting, knowledge creation and knowledge sharing.

"Power of the Youth"

I was touched by the variety of Indian panorama, emotional content of the tune, cultural diversity and unity of minds in the vast land of ours. I have cited these examples just to give a glimpse of the richness of our tradition and effort being taken by different agencies to preserve it. There are also many new adventures by institutions and individuals. I have experienced many of them and learnt a lot about my country and our people. Even while pursuing our economic growth, we need to do a lot to preserve the rich and diverse treasures of our culture and civilization. It is our duty for our future generations. This has to be done in a much larger scale through countrywide participation of multiple institutions.

Our country is blessed with natural resources, has shown considerable progress in the last sixty years, and above all we have hard working people particularly the power of the 540 million youth of the country. Every sector of our country has given me the confidence that India can become a developed nation well before 2020. Whomsoever, I met they constantly ask what they can give to the nation. We should constantly strive to empower such members of the society. With this spirit, I am extremely happy that we are on the right path. Here I am reminded of a famous poem:

"When you wish upon a star,
Makes no difference who you are,
Anything your heart desires,
Will come to you?

This poem is true to all of us, and particularly for our youth and if they aim great, I am sure they will reach close to the target or the target.

" Prefer Attitude Not Amplitude"

whenever I used to think about the things which are most important to the mankind in all their life. Few things come to my mind like Attitude, Love , Committment, Character , etc which are abstract in nature but still play a vital role in defining one's destiny in all aspects.

I am not in a position to suggest anybody but I would like to explore my opinion regarding the above mentioned subject in my blog, which I personally feel is " A Must For Every youngster".

Generally, people donot like to talk about Attitude instead they prefer to talk about Amplitude. Eventhough both words starts with same alphabet and ends with same "....itude".

Let us decide what is to be preferred in one's life among both in a comparative approach. I donot mean to ignore the Amplitude but when the situation comes in preferring, We need to give priority to Attitude not Amplitude. As it was rightly said " Quantity follows Quality".

Simillarly, In order to accomplish any work in an organization or group when working with in a team especially, We need not prefer the Quantity of the manpower to be more. But most importantly, For a given manpower prefer the people who has Quality with a positive Attitude who can effectively accomplish the given task.

Isn't it amazing that George Carlin - comedian of the 70's and 80's - could write something so very eloquent...and so very appropriate.

A Message by George Carlin:

The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider Freeways, but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time. We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness.

We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom.

We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often.

These are the days of two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes. These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, one night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill. Remember; spend some time with your loved ones, because they are not going to be around forever.

Remember to hold hands and cherish the moment for someday that person will not be there again.

Give time to love, give time to speak! And give time to share the precious thoughts in your mind.

• Take ownership for your project.
• Develop a “Statement Of Work”.

What happens if it’d not be done?
2. Scope of work: what you will do – a brief
statement describing the major work to be performed.
3. Strategy: how you plan to perform the work.
• Objectives
i. These are the end results to be achieved by the project.
ii. Each objective should include:
• Statement
• Measures
• Specifications

2. Meet with advisor to discuss and revise the “Statement of Work”.
• Good communication with your advisor is essential
• Make your long term goals clear.

3. Develop work breakdown structure and timeline for key events.
 Start with broad work assignments.
 Break them down into tasks.
 Divide these into discrete sub-tasks.

4. To be mentored well. should have the following:

On August 15 comes a day which is of great significance and importance in every Indian’s life. We celebrate this day to honor our Country, its people and the rich heritage and culture it has. We remember those who sacrificed their life for us and our Country. Who didn’t give up in the face of adversities and who set a principal for all future generations to come. On this day people from all religions come together as one, be it Hindus, Muslims or Christians. This is Our Independence Day. For every Indian, it signifies growth, prosperity, peace and unity. The colours of our Flag are based on just these principals and the blue wheel in the middle tells us to move forward with courage and honesty. No doubt the recent terrorist attack has dampened the celebrations of the country, but our spirits are forever high and being Indians, we have the safety of all our brothers too in mind. We are known as the Developing Country, which is good as we are open to change and flexible in our measures. To lead the second largely populated country with many religions, cultures and move forward is not an easy task. Yet we are achieving it with success. Yes there are times when fights occur, mishaps take place. But all five fingers are not alike. When in one house, the family members are not in agreement over certain issues, then in a country so vastly populated with 26 states, more than 300 languages, differences will certainly crop up, but we keep in mind everyone’s needs and move on. We love our country and everything connected to it and are aware that many changes still have to be implemented. The selflessness with which Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Bhagat Singh fought for the freedom, similarly we to need to fight the chains of terrorism, corruption and fights taking place in the name of religion. Come let us celebrate this independence Day with new hopes and aspirations. Lets adopt the motto,’Tum Chalo To Hindustan Chale’. Lets move forward together, lets motivate each other to achieve the impossible. When our elders could do it then and that to without non- violence, then why cant we? We can and we will because, this is our Country, our source of joy and pride

It can be only achieved by building confidence in individual or a group.
this can be done as follows :

Confidence comes with a planned preparation.
Depositing only positive thoughts in our memory.
Forget the words - I can't, Impossible, difficult, Problem, ....
Remeber the words - I can, Possible, It Will be easy, Solution, ....

We should not afraid to
1. sit in the front chair.
2. make Eye to Eye Contact.
3. speak up when you have something to say.
4. Smile big.
5. find out the new ways to accomplish the work.

About Engineering…………

Introduction: If you are considering a career in engineering, keep in mind that it will be a lifelong learning experience, and everything you do to prepare for it will help you reach your intended goal. The more you expose yourself to the world of engineering, the more opportunities you may have. The below are the commandments of an Engineering which will be helpful to become an effective Engineer. • Engineers apply math and science to problem solving. • Engineers must be able to communicate their ideas and expertise to others. • An engineering education teaches you how to think through a problem in order to solve it. I mean: These mental agility skills will help you solve problems for the rest of your life. The fascinating aspect about problem solving in engineering is that there is almost never a “right” answer. You access several different approaches to solve a problem, and then it is up to you to show everyone how your solution meets the needs of the design. • A degree in engineering can open many doors. I mean: People who want to improve society, reduce pollution, end world hunger, invent exciting cutting-edge technology, make life more convenient, or develop new theories to change the ways we think about the world must seriously consider a career in engineering. • Anyone who is up to the challenge and has a genuine interest in taking things apart, solving puzzles and problems, or understanding nature can succeed. • The skills necessary to succeed in engineering school are attained by determination, perseverance, effort, and creative problem-solving – the same skills necessary to be a competent engineer. I mean: Excellent grades in math and science through high school, although nice to have, are not prerequisites to becoming a good engineer. Many students do not apply themselves in high school but find out that when they try to work on a stimulating problem, they enjoy the problem-solving process and the solution comes easily. If you feel you have the aptitude and you make the commitment, you can and will succeed in engineering school. • There is something for everyone that enters the engineering field. • One element that all engineers have in common is their desire to help solve the world’s problems and make the world a better place • Natural curiosity is important to engineers. • Engineers love to figure things out and find out how things are made. • It is this mentality that helps propel them through their college classes. • You can never begin preparing for this career too soon. I mean: Get involved in extracurricular activities and tutoring that involve math or science. Part-time or summer jobs in engineering or manufacturing companies also show college admissions departments that you are serious. There are numerous science and engineering camps available and there is a junior engineering society that offers several ways to get exposure to engineering. • Leadership is a philosophy. It's an attitude. It's a state of mind. And it's available to each one of us. • Leadership has nothing to do with the title on your business card or the size of your office. I mean: Leadership is not about how much money you make or the clothes you wear. The above message is intended for the emerging engineers of our dream technical society. I still feel that there are many people who don’t know exactly what engineering is about? In order to make it clear the concept of Engineering.
